+Stop Using Heat:
Heat damages your hair causing breakage, split ends and dryness. I used to obsessively straighten my hair
//Scalp massages are important
Scalp massages help to increase blood circulation in the scalp and stimulate hair growth. You can use essential oils such as peppermint, jojoba, & grapeseed oil to further stimulate. They also feel REALLY good and help relieve stress and headaches.
+Foods rich in B vitamins help
Taking a supplement with B vitamins, Biotin or folic acid will allow you to see a marked increase in your hair growth, complexion and the strength of your nails.
//Shampooing your hair too much causes breakage
Cut down on shampooing and your hair WILL benefit. Sulfates (a main ingredient in most shampoos) strip your hair and cause more oil to be produced, meaning you need to wash your hair more often.
Your hair could look greasy for a while after you start this, but the less you wash your hair the more it will adjust to that routine. Twice a week is the most I'd say you should wash your hair, depending on your hair type.
You may also want to look for a less harsh shampoo ( sulfate free) . My baking soda and vinegar rinse is good for this :
+Use Wider Tooth Combs
If you have tangle prone hair it is advisable to finger detangle your hair rather than comb as this is a more gentle way to undo knots instead of tugging and pulling the hair with a comb. If you can't go without combing, switch to using a wider tooth comb.
//Deep Condition Your Hair Regularly
It's important you keep your hair moisturized if you want to grow it. I recommend you do it at least once weekly the day you plan to wash your hair and can be followed up by the baking soda/vinegar rinse I mentioned before.
Here are some oils which promote hair growth:
- Peppermint Oil
- Rosemary Oil
- Lavender Oil
- Coconut Oil
- Grapeseed Oil
- Shea Oil
Keep in mind you want HEALTHY hair, and the length follows.
Following these tips allowed me to go from having heat damaged chin length hair with split ends to having hair that reaches the bottom of my bra strap (20 inches), in about 1 year.
Have you ever used the Tangle Teezer for brushing your hair after you get out of the shower? I seriously used a wide tooth comb for as long as I can remember and a year or so I discovered the Tangle Teezer (bought it at Sallys) Honestly, it looks like crap but it's seriously the best hairbrush ever. Wish it had a handle though.
ReplyDeleteI've heard nothing but good things about the Tangle Teezer especially for those with curly hair like mine, but I've not been able to find one in Barbados and most American sites don't ship to Barbados :( I was thinking how impractical not having a handle on it is, but if it gets out the tangles it's totally worth it!
DeleteCedarwood is a great oil for hair growth as well.
ReplyDeleteI've never tried it but it does smell good!
DeleteGood information to know! I tried to wash my hair every other day this summer and have done pretty good sticking to the schedule now that school is back in session.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely does get healthier over time if you wash it less often. I used to wash mine every single day, then every other day, then twice a week and after that once a week.
DeleteGreat tips! I try not to wash my hair every single day
ReplyDeleteYour hair will definitely get healthier the less frequently you wash it!
DeleteHere's how I grew my hair thicker and healthier: I got pregnant. ;) Seriously though, that really worked, but these are great tips. I follow most of the tips and my hair is very thick, healthy, and long.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean. I'm pregnant right now and my hair is the thickest it's EVER been. I'm worried about the shedding afterwards though.
DeleteI do not have long hair but I am doing all I can to keep my daughters' hair healthy and long. Thank you for these tips!
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome! My mom didn't really know what to do with my hair since it's so curly so I had to find out what worked for me on my own.
DeleteThank you. These tips are excellent!
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading Christen!
DeleteThe laying off the heat point is so important. I've stopped using dryers and straighteners and my hair is so much better condition :)
ReplyDeleteI thought I had heard all of the hair growth tips, but you had some new ones for me today! The biggest thing for me is to avoid using the straightener whenever possible. I try to limit it to a couple times a month.
ReplyDeleteYes! I used to use straighteners EVERY day but it totally fried my hair. I cut them out completely and now it feels really weird straightening my hair.
DeleteWhat foods has b vitamins? Good tips!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGreats tips! Using wide teeth combs have really helped my hair a lot <3
ReplyDeleteYeah it's way easier to use wide tooth combs on your hair - it breaks the hair way less. My hair's so curly that it actually breaks the teeth on smaller combs.
DeleteI LOVE head massages...as I type, I'm getting one rite now <3 Thanks for the great info and tips! :)
ReplyDeleteLucky you!
DeleteThanks for the great tips. I am always looking for ways to make my hair healthier. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading dear!
DeleteFantastic tips. I think eating a healthy diet can help with healthy looking hair.
ReplyDeleteIt definitely can. Unfortunately I don't eat a very healthy diet lol.
DeleteI never knew that a scalp massage would stimulate hair growth, I'm definitely gonna be asking my boyfriend for a scalp massage more often :)
ReplyDeleteYeah it can really help. I used to do them weekly and I noticed a huge increase in growth and they feel really good to as an added bonus!
DeleteOooh, I love scalp massages! I've stopped using heat on my hair and see a huge difference in breakage now
ReplyDeleteScalp massages are the best!! Folic acid is amazing too, my hair and nails have never been healthier since starting prenatals (still taking them while nursing) I don't think I ever want to stop!
ReplyDeleteI don't think you need to stop taking the prenatals after you stop nursing. My hair and nails have been really thick since getting pregnant but the vitamins don't seem to agree with me.
DeleteGreat tips! My hair is super long and I always get asked this question.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips! My hair is already super thick, but could definitely use a health boost!
ReplyDeleteThick doesn't always mean its as healthy as it could be so it's good to still be able to treat your hair well.
DeleteOh, I need to get in on the scalp massages so I can have long hair! No wonder my husband always has long hair, I'm always rubbing his head! thanks for the tips!
ReplyDeleteThey do feel amazing so you should get your hubby to return the favor!
DeleteLove this! I have really thick hair already but these tips will make my hair so much healthier! Thanks for sharing! :)
ReplyDeleteYeah I think there's always room for improvement in your hair care no matter how good it is lol. Thank you for reading!
DeleteI'm going to have to try all of these! My hair is so thin and I feel it's still falling out from after having my son, haha!
ReplyDeleteI'm absolutely terrified about post-partum shedding because my hair is so thick right now since I'm pregnant. When did the shedding start for you?
